PERKS OF publication |
|
Each year up to 175,000 books are published, plus many thousands of magazine and newspaper articles. If others are selling their work, seeing their names in print, and enjoying the perks of being published, why not you? Here are some perks.
Getting published...
1. Qualifies You as an “Expert”: Once you’re “the author of” a book or article on a select topic, such as post-partum depression, bipolar disorder, or addiction in teens, others begin to see you as the go-to “expert” in that area.
2. Helps You Build Your Practice: Getting published can result in more referrals from your colleagues, requests for media interviews, and speaking engagements – all of which can help you build your practice even more.
3. Serves as a Marketing Tool: As soon as you get an article published, make copies and send it out to potential referral resources (doctors, other therapists, agencies, etc.) with a cover letter and your card. It’ll be impressive; they’ll remember you.
4. Financial Gains: Financially, you may not make out like John Grisham, but once you learn the ropes you can make some serious money writing. Set a goal for yourself: “Next year 25% of my income will be from my writing.”
5. Provides a Service: If other “perks” don’t inspire you to write, try seeing it as your responsibility to society to communicate what you’ve learned to others so they can benefit from it. So share your wisdom; pass it on to others in print.
6. Legacy: It’s human nature to want to leave something of ourselves behind when we die, something that will immortalize us – at least in the eyes of our friends and family. An article or book with our by-line can do this.
7. Psychological Satisfaction: Getting published feels good. When you’ve put your heart into writing something, it’s deeply satisfying to see it in print. And the very first time you get published is such an important milestone -- it makes you “legit.” Now you can say you are a real writer, not just a wanna-be writer…
...Now you are a therapist who writes! |
